In 2012, 2013, and 2014, I designed three separate issues of Hillsdale College's once-per-semester literary magazine Tower Light. The editors gave me a lot of creative freedom, especially for the first two issues I designed. (The editor of the third issue wanted to mimic the design of Poetry magazine for the layout, so I reproduced a look more than created one.)
For the first issue, I worked with a fellow student on the cover, providing art direction and editing on a charcoal drawing she created.
The second issue was my favorite. The editor wanted to evoke the feeling of a 1970s paperback, so I developed a palette inspired by some of the popular colors of that decade but tweaked for a more contemporary feel. The cover illustration was all my work, and I loved experimenting with that abstract, colorful style.
The third issue was more of a professional execution project than a creative enterprise, but at least the constraints made the project easier. The cover photograph was taken by Sally O'Donnell, now a talented wedding photographer based in the Chicago area. Check out her website if you're looking for a wedding photographer: She shot something like half of my friends' weddings, and I can't say enough good things about her work.
